ASAHP members often seek information and guidance from fellow members. Their queries are transmitted by the Association to colleagues and responses are compiled. Topics of a generic nature and the replies that are generated appear in this portion of the website. They are:
Q. Do your colleges/schools – or selective programs – charge a reservation fee as part of the acceptance package? If so, how much is the fee?”
A. Some ASAHP member institutions charge a fee ranging from $55.15 to $1,000 for all their respective programs. Other institutions charge fees for individual programs such as physical therapy $100-$300), physician assistant ($250), and nurse anesthetist ($1,000).
Q. What are the policy and/or practices of hiring faculty with tenure?
A. Yes to Hiring with Tenure
Twenty institutions (59%) had a policy or practice of hiring faculty with tenure. Five institutions limited this to full professors, five for endowed chairs, and 10 for associate professor and above. Generally, these candidates were reviewed by the home department and made recommendations to the dean. In some cases, the institution level T&P committee made the recommendation to Dean and Provost. In all cases, the recommendations followed normal approval/recommendation process (Dean, Provost, President, and Board).
No to Hiring with Tenure
Fourteen institutions (41%) had no policy or did not allow hiring faculty with tenure. In some of these institutions, if candidates had previously earned tenure, then they would have to have residency for one (three institutions) or two (five institutions) years before being evaluated for T and or Promotion (some were hired at the Associate Rank).
No Policy
Eleven schools that had no policy or did not allow hiring faculty with tenure, allowed candidates up to three years of credit (six institutions) or it was negotiated at the time of an offer being made (five institutions).
Q. Promotional criteria for non-tenure-track faculty (i.e., clinical faculty) are not always clear. These individuals play a critical role in providing clinical supervision to students in programs such as nursing and dental hygiene. ASAHP members were asked to answer the following questions:
1. Does you institution provide a promotional system for clinical faculty?
2. Can clinical faculty move through ranks much the same as tenure-track faculty (Clinical Assistant Professor, Clinical Associate Professor, etc.)?
3. What are the promotional criteria for clinical faculty?
4. How does the promotional system for clinical faculty differ from the promotional system for tenure-track faculty?
A. Responses to these questions are as follows: CLINICAL FACULTY TENURE AND PROMOTION AT VARIOUS UNIVERSITIES
Q. What percent of your unrestricted budget is Tuition and Fees?; Do you have differential tuition or fees for any of your allied health programs?
A. see attached.
