| The Center for the Intrepid is a rehabilitation facility for wounded warriors with multiple trauma and is located on Ft. Sam Houston.
It was specifically built to provide care for United States servicemen and women who have served in military operations in the Iraq War and the War in Afghanistan.
Over 600,000 people contributed to the $50 million construction cost. |

Dr. Rebecca Storey Hooper was born and raised in Berea, Ohio. After graduating from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in 1974, she entered active duty and attended the U.S. Army-Baylor University Graduate Program in Physical Therapy. Dr. Hooper spent an initial tour at Fort Jackson, SC and then explored civilian practice for three and one-half years. During that time she remained in the United States Army Reserve. Returning to active duty in 1981 she had a variety of clinical and staff assignments culminating as the 15 th Chief of the Army Medical Specialist Corps charged with the responsibility for over 1000 Army Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Dietitians, and Physician Assistants worldwide. Dr. Hooper retired from active duty 1 January 2006 after 31 years of service.
Dr. Hooper's education includes a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University of Texas at Austin in 1995 and graduation from the Army War College at Carlisle Barracks in 1996. She has multiple military awards including the Legion of Merit, the Surgeon General's “A” Proficiency Designator, and the Order of Military Medical Merit. Dr. Hooper has been active in local and state components of the APTA as well becoming involved with Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) as an On-Site Reviewer in 1997 and PT panel Commissioner from 2005 until 2008.
In February of 2006, Dr. Hooper accepted a position as the Program Manager for the soon to be completed Center for the Intrepid at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC). Her responsibilities for the first year included monitoring the acquisition of the equipment and personnel for the new center. Today, her duties entail supervising the day-to-day operations at the Center for the Intrepid.
