E. Andrew Balas
Dean and Professor
College of Allied Health Sciences
Background and Aspirations
I have been serving as allied health dean and also active member of ASAHP over 13 years. Being part of our professional Association has always been a true privilege, great networking and excellent learning opportunity.
In spite of impressive progress, the health professions represented by our association face major challenges. Difficulties of reimbursement, sometimes outdated limitations on the scope of practice make it more challenging to turn our skills to the benefit of patients and communities. High level discussions and national academies frequently involve other health professions but infrequently allied health. Building on the best achievements and strategic priorities of our association, we can move forward in elevating our activities and effectiveness to new levels.
Thanks to the talent and dedication of my faculty and staff colleagues, our College of Allied Health Sciences has made tremendous progress over the past five years. We substantially increased student enrollment, launched several new programs and multiplied research. Not just our college but also our professional organizations can make major progress by listening and promoting collaboration.
If elected to serve, I would like to promote positive dialogue, inclusiveness, listening to our members, and active partnership with the various deans groups. I am committed to strengthening our engagement in the national discussions about the future of health professions and support for education of health professionals. We have excellent opportunities to promote coordination, interprofessional communication and collaboration with a focus on our strategic objectives. In serving our students, member schools and fellow citizens, we can bring people together and get the job done.
Over the past 6 years, I have been serving as dean of the College of Allied Health Sciences at Augusta University, the premier academic health center of the University System of Georgia. Augusta University, a Carnegie doctoral university, higher research activity that represents the merger of the Augusta State University and the Medical College of Georgia founded in 1828.
