Barry S. Eckert, Ph.D.
Dean
School of Health Professions
Long Island University, Brooklyn Campus

Barry Eckert

I have been Dean of the School of Health Professions at Long Island University in Brooklyn since 2007 and was Dean at Armstrong Atlantic State Univeristy from 2001-2007.  During the past 10 years I have focused upon workforce needs, service to the community and addressing diversity and disparities in health care.  I have focused upon program develoment that not only addresses local and national needs for allied health professionals but also increases access to allied health careers for potential students from varying backgrounds.  I believe that these are critical issues for the immediate and long term future because of the evolving delivery of health care in response both to increasing demand and to the Affordable Care Act.  Current economic conditions have also had a significant impact on education and the careers that students are choosing. I have had the priviledge of participating in ASAHP, focusing on these issues, by serving as a board member for one term. During my term I have been the board liaison to the Education Committee, which is critical to our mission.  I served on the Finance Committee of the ASAHP Board, working with other members to streamline and enhance our financial practices.  I also helped establish the International Task Force, which has begun focusing on international education and service as these activities fit into our allied health programs.  I look forward to continuing these activitis in a second term.
