Douglas Murphy

An educational psychologist by education and experience, I have held positions as an associate dean and dean in schools of allied health professions for the past 12 years.  For most of that time I have been involved in ASAHP activities as a conference participant and presenter, member of ASAHP committees, and participant in the associate/assistant deans’ group.  Because ASAHP is the only national voice for allied health education those of us in the association have the responsibility to represent our professions with authority and clarity, particularly with regard to education and health care policy.  As a professional association, we must be an assertive, collaborative partner with similar associations in medicine, nursing, dentistry, public health, etc., to assure that the allied health professions have a high profile in all discussions about education, research, and practice in healthcare.  In addition, ASAHP should continue and expand, when possible, its invaluable service in support of allied health schools and educators.  Opportunities for information sharing, networking, and coordination have contributed much to program quality and collaboration.  The strength of ASAHP, and our primary challenge, is the diversity of professions and programs that we represent and that look to us for direction and support.
