Barry S. Eckert, Ph.D., FASAHP has been a member of ASAHP since 1996 and been on the Board of Directors since 2009.  Dr. Eckert has served on the Research Committee and the Education Committee as well as chair of the Education Committee.  During his service as chair of the Education Committee, that group authored a white paper on clinical doctorates that was ultimately adopted by ASAHP as a position paper.  He currently serves as the Board Liaison to the Education Committee.  Dr. Eckert also serves on the Finance Committee of the Board and heads a task force on International Programs.  He is President of the College of Health Deans subgroup.

Dr. Eckert currently is Dean of the School of Health Professions at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus and has held this position since September 2007.  Prior to that, he was dean of the College of Health Professions at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, GA, and had been Interim Dean of the School of Health Related Professions at the University at Buffalo.  He was a faculty member in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University at Buffalo from 1977-2000.  Dr.  Eckert earned his Ph.D. in Anatomy and Cell Biology from the University of Miami School of Medicine and his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Biology from The University at Albany (SUNY).  He did a postdoctoral fellowship in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Dr. Eckert currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Greater Brooklyn Health Coalition, the Leadership Committee of the New York Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation and the Board of Directors of the Brooklyn Chapter of the American Cancer Society.  He has served on the Board of the Coastal Georgia Region of the American Cancer Society, President of the Southeast Georgia Cancer Alliance, the Board of Directors of the Savannah Chapter of the National Black Leadership Initiative in Cancer and the Regional Program Committee of the Georgia Cancer Coalition.  He also served on the Health Workforce Task Force of the University System of Georgia and on the Workforce Committee of the Georgia Hospital Association.  He was honored with the Healthcare Innovation award by the Georgia Medical Society in 2004 and the Healthcare Workforce Leadership Award by the Georgia Hospital Association in 2005.
