Harold P. Jones, Ph.D., FASAHP, has served as Dean of the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Health Professions since 2001. Prior to that, he was Dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences at East Carolina University for nine years. His previous positions include serving as the first Branch Chief for the Science Planning and Analysis Branch at the National Institute on Drug Abuse, as  Program Director for the Shared Instrument and Instrument Development Programs at the National Science Foundation, as Associate Dean for the College of Allied Health Professions at the University of South Alabama and as a faculty member in the Department of Biochemistry in the School of Medicine at the University of South Alabama where he received more than $1.0 million in extramural research support from NIH, NSF and the American Heart Association.

Dr. Jones was a founding member of the North Carolina Council on Allied Health, was a co-founder and co-chair of the Santa Fe Research Consortium and was one of two deans selected to serve on the Pew Commission Workgroup on the Future of Allied Health. He has been an active member of the Southern Association of Allied Health Deans at Academic Health Centers since 1992. Within the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions he has served on the Government Relations Committee and as a member of the editorial advisory board for the Journal of Allied Health. He was an invited participant in the IOM Health Professions Education Summit and was co-leader of a HRSA-sponsored workshop entitled “Providing Rehabilitative Services in Rural Communities.” d He is a regular speaker at conferences on policy issues related to health workforce needs and impacts of governmental policy on allied health practice and education. on the Future of Allied Health

Among his awards are the University of South Alabama’s Outstanding Scholar Award, the Journal of Allied Health’s J. Warren Perry Distinguished Author Award and election as a fellow of the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions. Dr. Jones received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Duke University, his B.S. from Rhodes College and is a graduate of Harvard’s Management Development and Management and Leadership in Education programs.
