Dean

The School of Allied Health Sciences at the Medical College of Georgia, the Health Sciences University of the State of Georgia, seeks a dean to lead the school and invites nominations and expressions of interest in the position.

Since its founding in 1968, the School of Allied Health Sciences has established a strong position in the state. With 730 students and 65 full-time faculty members, the school plays a key role in educating students for the healthcare professions as well as contributing to the creation of new knowledge and serving the regional community. At the undergraduate level there are programs in dental hygiene, health informatics, clinical laboratory sciences, respiratory therapy, diagnostic medicine sonography, nuclear medicine technology and radiation therapy. At the master's level, there are programs in dental hygiene, clinical laboratory sciences, medical illustration, physician assistant, medical dosimetry, health informatics, and occupational therapy. There is a doctoral program in physical therapy. The budget of the school was $9.6 million in fiscal 2010.

The dean serves as the executive officer with primary responsibility for the School of Allied Health Sciences, exercising responsibility for conceiving and managing policy, programs and resource allocation to achieve its mission. Reporting to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, he/she advises the president and provost on all issues relating to the allied health professions, serving as a member of the provost's council of deans. The dean sets the standard of intellectual engagement and accomplishment for the School of Allied Health Sciences. He/she provides strategic vision and operational leadership for the academic and scholarly program, creating an environment and community that supports the school's faculty, research agenda, students, and staffs. He/she provides the leadership to assure that the school continues to serve its students with academic programs of the highest quality and effectiveness. The dean, with the faculty, defines the standard of excellence for faculty recruitment, promotion and retention. Supporting the university's research mission, the dean advances the scholarly activities of the faculty, including opportunities that interdisciplinary approaches afford. He/she collaborates with the deans of medicine, dentistry, nursing, and graduate studies in the creation of increased opportunities for education and research across the health professions, as well as the affiliated institutions. The dean has responsibility for the fiscal integrity of the School of Allied Health Sciences, providing leadership and exercising responsibility for fund raising. He/she also provides leadership to assure the success of the Allied Health Sciences Practice Group, Inc. He/she is the public voice of the school, articulating its goals, mission and initiatives within the university, throughout Georgia and beyond?" articulating its contributions in local, state, regional, and national arenas of the allied health professions and developing strategic relationships with public and private constituencies.

With experience in a research university, the ideal candidate will have demonstrated success as an educator, a researcher committed to the search for new knowledge, an experienced clinician understanding health care delivery and one able to imagine new possibilities for the school. The leader will be an experienced manager, able to use the school's assets optimally, with proven success in external fund development. The candidate will possess credentials that merit appointment at the rank of full professor. The candidate should be a credentialed allied health professional with a doctorate in one of the allied health professions, education, or in a related field.
