UT Southwestern Medical Center

Background and Aspirations

With some very good mentoring, sound advice to always work hard and lots of luck, I have been able to navigate the academic career pathway, receiving a Ph.D. in physiology, completing post-doctoral training in cardiology & neurology, working as faculty in a department of physical therapy, doing NIH funded rehabilitation research, receiving tenure and eventually leading my own department.

As I began to assume a greater breadth of administrative responsibility for the institution (even enjoying most of the challenges), I completed a master’s in administrative & management science, and then somehow wound up as a Dean. While I have been associated with ASAHP for several years, I have gained sufficient experience and perspective to now make a more significant contribution to ASAHP. This organization represents a diverse group of disciplines with the skills and knowledge needed to take lead role in the transformation of healthcare. I think there is great opportunity for ASAHP to better advocate inter-professional education for all health care providers (e.g. create best practice models & training programs), develop partnerships with diverse, like-minded organizations (e.g. American College of Sports Medicine) to help increase visibility and research opportunities, and involve more health professions students in the national organization (e.g. developing our future leaders). I am very appreciative of the opportunities that I have been provided and desire to continue to ‘pay it forward’ as best I can. I look forward to serving ASAHP and thank you for your consideration.
