An Invitation To Develop Emerging Allied Health Leaders…

PURPOSE

To identify and support emerging leaders within ASAHP Member Institutions.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

To succeed in today's health care enviroment, the allied health professions need to identify, develop, and mentor new leaders. The Coalition for Allied Health Leadership is pleased to announce a leadership program to train leaders in the areas of practice, education, and research. The Coalition for Allied Health Leadership Program is a collaborative activity in conjunction with ASAHP, the Health Professions Network (HPN), the National Network of Health Career Programs in Two Year Colleges (NN2), the National Society of Allied Health (NSAH), and the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC).

During two week-long conferences, participants will define the qualities of leadership, learn problem-solving and decision-making skills and discuss the attributes necessary to lead in a time of transition. In addition, participants will discuss regulatory and legislative issues, and learn how to work with governmental agencies and elected representatives.

  • Understand the workings of Congress, Federal agencies, and lobbyists.
  • Explore national issues affecting allied health practice and education.
  • Collaborate with other allied health disciplines.
  • Engage in interdisciplinary projects that will advance allied health.

In addition, participants will be asked to complete homework assignments, work on a group project, and be encouraged to participate in the program of the next ASAHP Annual Conference, which usually occurs in October of that same year.

ASSOCIATION EXPENSES

The supporting association is responsible for each participant's transportation, food and lodging costs.

ASAHP will contribute up to $1,000 to defray costs including registration fees upon completion of both sessions; however, the candidate and the institution will assume all other expenses associated with participation. It is anticipated that these additional costs will vary from $1,700 to $2,300.

PARTICIPANT QUALIFICATIONS

Nominees must be from an Institutional Member of the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions. Each ASAHP Member Institution may nominate one individual.

Nominees should be full-time employees with faculty rank and experience in allied health education.

Nominees must be available to attend two workshops in their entirety during the year and agree to participate in the activities of a yearlong leadership development program.

Nominees should be considered emerging leaders within their institutions.

PARTICIPANT SELECTION

The ASAHP Board of Directors will appoint a Leadership Selection Committee. The Committee will review all nomination portfolios and select as many as ten candidates and two alternates for the program.

Criteria will emphasize:

- leadership experience and future potential of the candidate

- teaching and research experience,

- local, national, regional involvement, and

- involvement with ASAHP or other professional organizations.

Coalition for Allied Health Leadership is supported by a contract from the Department of Health and Human Services, the Health Resources and Services Administration, Bureau of Health Professions, Division of State, Community and Public Health .
