Federal Definitions of Allied Health

Allied health is defined in the Federal Code and further defined in The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA).  Allied health is also included in eligibility criteria for participation in grant programs administered by the U.S. Department of Labor and the U.S. Public Health Service. The ACA (P.L. 111-148) defines allied health professionals as follows:  1) ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONAL.—The term“allied health professional” means an allied health professional as defined in section 799B(5) of the Public Health Service Act (42 U.S.C. 295p(5)) who— (A) has graduated and received an allied health professions degree or certificate from an institution of higher education; and (B) is employed with a Federal, State, local or tribal public health agency, or in a setting or in a setting where patients might require health care services, including acute care facilities, ambulatory care facilities, personal residences, and other settings located in health professional shortage areas, medically underserved areas, or medically underserved populations, as recognized by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Title 42, Chapter 6A, Subchapter V, Part F, Sec. 295p of the Federal Code states that the term ”allied health professionals” means a health professional (other than a registered nurse or physician assistant) who has not received a degree of doctor of medicine, a degree of doctor of osteopathy, a degree of doctor of dentistry or an equivalent degree, a degree of doctor of veterinary medicine or an equivalent degree, a degree of doctor of optometry or an equivalent degree, a degree of doctor of podiatric medicine or an equivalent degree, a degree of bachelor of science in pharmacy or an equivalent degree, a degree of doctor of pharmacy or an equivalent degree, a graduate degree in public health or an equivalent degree, a degree of doctor of chiropractic or an equivalent degree, a graduate degree in health administration or an equivalent degree, a doctoral degree in clinical psychology or an equivalent degree, or a degree in social work or an equivalent degree or a degree in counseling or an equivalent degree.

RESOLVED, the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions (ASAHP) Board of Directors approves the above definition of allied health on this 27th day of October, 2015.

Award: 2-3 grant(s) may be awarded up to $30,000 per award. Awards will be provided for one year of support. The number of grants and grant amount awarded will ultimately depend on the quality, potential outcome(s) and total cost. Funds cannot be used for indirect costs or F&A. Grant funds may be used for ASAHP Annual Conference travel and registration but may not exceed $2,000. Conference travel and registration funding would be included in the total proposal budget. Any other travel is not allowed.

Post-Award Requirements

Awardees will be asked to provide a project summary (limited to 200 words) in lay terms for public dissemination. All projects are expected to be initiated and finalized in a timely fashion. Awardees will provide a mid-year, one-page progress report to the ASAHP Research, Discovery, and Innovation Committee in January 2026. A template will be provided.

At the end of the one-year project term, awardees will provide a one-page report by November 15, 2026, to the ASAHP Research, Discovery, and Innovation Committee indicating results obtained, list of publications and presentations, and plans or progress toward obtaining external funding. Acknowledgement of ASAHP funding support must be listed in each communication of the outcomes of the project supported by this award. Awardees will also be asked to present their findings at the 2026 ASAHP Annual Conference and its anticipated research findings would be published in the Journal of Allied Health.

For a period of three years following the expiration of the grant term, the awardee agrees to submit to ASAHP, on an annual basis and using the prescribed reporting form, a comprehensive record of all publications, external grant awards, scholarly presentations, and new collaborations that arise from or utilize data generated during the grant period.

Requests for no-cost extensions are discouraged. They may be only granted under extraordinary circumstances for up to three months and a formal request must be written to the IP grant subcommittee, including the rationale and a new proposed timeline. The researcher will still be expected to present at the 2026 ASAHP Annual Conference if granted a no-cost extension.

Frequently asked questions

What are considered health professions?
The definition of health professions can be found here. For the purposes of this application, the health professions refers to professions except for MOD-VOPP (medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, veterinary medicine, optometry, podiatry, pharmacy).

What determines eligibility of an interprofessional team?
An interprofessional team includes one or more faculty team members from at least two different health professions. For example, one team member could be from occupational therapy and another from audiology. A team with both members from occupational therapy would not be eligible.

Do I have to include all $30,000 in my grant proposal?

Two to three grants will be awarded up to $30,000. Your budget proposal can be up to $30,000.

Do I have to be an ASAHP member to apply?

Yes, only faculty at ASAHP member institutions are eligible to apply and only one application may be submitted per member institution. The Principal Investigator (PI) must maintain active ASAHP membership throughout the entire grant period. If membership lapses, grant funding may be subject to forfeiture and required to be returned.

How is the Interprofessional Collaboration Grant different than ASAHP's Interprofessional Innovation Grant (IIG)?
ASAHP's Interprofessional Innovation Grant (IIG) Program supports pilot programs and provides recipients a competitive edge in securing additional funding by supporting pilot projects and further developing grantsmanship skill sets. IIG grants are up to $2,000. The Interprofessional Collaboration Grant program supports innovative research projects with awards up to $30,000.
