2023 ASAHP Regional Summit Recap

The Association of Schools Advancing Health Professions hosted its 4th Annual ASAHP Regional Summit hosted by ASAHP’s Interprofessional Committee This year’s theme focused on “Joining Forces to Build a Resilient, Collaborative and Practice-Ready Healthcare Workforce” and sought to promote dialogue between academic institutions and their health care industry partners to improve collaboration and enhance health outcomes.

Due to high demand and through the support of national sponsor LifePoint Health, the number of in person hubs doubled this year from three to six across the US with over 240 total participants from academic institutions and their healthcare industry partners.

Hub sites and hosts included:

  • Nutley, New Jersey – Seton Hall University host

  • Layton, Utah – Weber State University and University of Utah hosts

  • Houston, Texas – University of Texas (UT) MD Anderson Cancer Center, UT Medical Branch Galveston and UT Health San Antonio hosts

  • Fort Lauderdale, Florida – Nova Southeastern University host

  • Cincinnati, Ohio – University of Cincinnati host

  • Sioux Falls, South Dakota – University of South Dakota host

The hubs all met simultaneously in-person using a structured 3-hour process to generate and support dialogue around workforce readiness concluding with national virtual harvest session where key takeaways were shared from each hub. Comments, conversations, and recommendations from each hub and the virtual harvest were recorded and will be analyzed for themes for dissemination and publication. 

Preliminary themes included:

  • We need to work to “bridge the gap” between education and clinical practice through consistent, communication and dialogue;

  • Empower students to make an authentic impact in clinical practice;

  • Support and train clinical preceptors who have such an important role

  • Create new models to provide win-wins and change workplace culture;;

  • Development of structures and resource to improve access, affordability and support collaboration; and

  • Evidence-based change should be embraced to improve the system moving forward.
