Position Summary
The Journal of Allied Health (JAH), the official scholarly publication of the Association of Schools Advancing Health Professions (ASAHP), seeks an Editor-in-Chief. The candidate will transition into this role to ensure the long-term continuity of the Journal, working closely with the current Editor-in-Chief, while he transitions to Editor-in-Chief Emeritus role.
Phased Responsibilities
Phase I: Editorial Training & Shared Leadership
During the initial training period, the Editor-in-Chief will work under the mentorship of the Editor-in-Chief Emeritus to develop full competency in journal operations, including:
Editorial Operations
Participate in manuscript triage, peer-review coordination, and editorial decision-making.
Learn and apply the Journal’s editorial policies, ethical standards, and review protocols.
Support efforts to ensure timely, fair, and high-quality peer review.
Editorial Board & Reviewer Engagement
Assist with managing and supporting editorial board members and reviewers.
Participate in reviewer recruitment and onboarding efforts.
Attend editorial board meetings and contribute to discussions on journal priorities and policies.
Publisher Relations
Shadow and support interactions with the Journal’s publisher related to production schedules, workflows, and policies.
Gain familiarity with copyediting, proofing, issue assembly, and publication timelines.
Content Development
Collaborate on identifying special issues, invited manuscripts, and emerging areas of interest in allied health education and practice.
Engage with authors to strengthen submissions and promote high-quality scholarship.
Phase II: Expanded Leadership & Transition to Editor-in-Chief
As training milestones are met, the Editor-in-Chief will assume expanded responsibility, including:
Editorial Leadership
Take primary responsibility for manuscript decisions and editorial oversight, in coordination with the Editor-in-Chief Emeritus.
Ensure consistent application of editorial standards and policies.
Strategic Direction
Partner with the Editor-in-Chief Emeritus to shape the Journal’s strategic vision, growth, and visibility.
Support alignment of the Journal with ASAHP’s mission and priorities.
Metrics & Reporting
Monitor and analyze key performance indicators, including submission volume, acceptance rates, reviewer turnaround times, readership, and citation metrics.
Assist in preparing regular updates and annual reports for the ASAHP Board of Directors.
Succession Readiness
Demonstrate readiness to assume full Editor-in-Chief responsibilities.
Support a smooth and deliberate leadership transition, ensuring continuity of quality, relationships, and institutional knowledge.
Qualifications
Terminal degree in an allied health profession, health sciences, or related field.
Established record of peer-reviewed scholarly publications.
Prior editorial experience (e.g., associate editor, editorial board member, or similar role) strongly preferred.
Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
Commitment to advancing allied health education, research, and scholarship.
Willingness to engage in a structured leadership transition and long-term stewardship of the Journal.
Time Commitment & Compensation
Estimated commitment: 8–12 hours per week, with variability based on manuscript volume and phase of transition.
Compensation: A stipend will be provided.
