The Association of Schools Advancing Health Professions (ASAHP) is delighted to recognize retired Dean Jesús García-Martínez, MD, MSc, PhD, FASAHP with the Outstanding Member Award. This prestigious award recognizes members who have contributed significantly to ASAHP during the previous year and who, by example, have inspired others through their demonstrated leadership and active involvement in ASAHP affairs. It is among a slate of awards honoring higher education health professionals from across the country for their leadership, contributions and excellence in the fields of health sciences and health professions.
The award will be presented to García-Martínez during ASAHP’s annual conference “Harmonizing the Future of Health Professions Education” which is scheduled for October 27-29, 2026 at the Embassy Suites by Hilton in Nashville, Tennessee. The Awards Ceremony session will take place on Wednesday, October 28 at 10:45 AM (CT) and is FREE for all conference attendees.
García-Martínez has a distinguished career in health professions education and health sciences leadership. Before his recent retirement, he served as Interim Dean, College of Professional Studies at Indiana University South Bend. Prior to that role, he was the associate dean for research and professor of clinical health sciences for the Doisy College of Health Sciences at Saint Louis University. Before SLU, he worked for more than twenty years as Associate Professor at the University of Illinois Chicago. Among his signature achievements, Dr. García-Martínez has strived for decades to increase the representation of disadvantaged students in health care and professional studies.

"His dedication to expanding opportunities for disadvantaged students pursuing careers in the health professions has helped shape a more inclusive and representative workforce, inspiring colleagues across the country. We are proud to recognize his lasting contributions and the example he continues to set for our members and the next generation of health professions leaders."
