Background and aspirations for ASAHP
As a dedicated academic professional with over two decades of experience in education, I am deeply committed to advancing health professions education through innovation, research, and interprofessional collaboration. My professional journey has been marked by a continuous evolution from K-12 education to higher education, culminating in my current roles as Assistant Professor and Director of Academic Assessment, Compliance, and Special Projects at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. These roles have provided me with a platform to influence curriculum development, educational quality, and faculty advancement across diverse health professions programs.
My academic and professional trajectory reflects a sustained focus on leadership, curriculum development, and assessment. With a PhD in Leadership Studies, I have applied research-based strategies to enhance student learning outcomes and support faculty development. I have led program evaluations, designed and implemented assessment systems, and facilitated accreditation processes, all while maintaining a strong commitment to data-driven decision-making. These experiences have reinforced my belief in the transformative power of assessment and its role in improving educational equity, instructional effectiveness, and student achievement.
As a long-standing member of ASAHP, I have participated in numerous annual conferences and contributed to the scholarly dialogue through presentations and publications in the Journal of Allied Health. My research explores critical topics such as student career motivations, instructional effectiveness, the impact of interprofessional education (IPE), and programmatic responses to crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. These contributions underscore my commitment to evidence-based practices and my aspiration to influence broader academic and policy-level discussions within ASAHP.
Looking forward, I am eager to expand my role within ASAHP to contribute more directly to its mission of enhancing health professions education. I envision collaborating with fellow members to advance initiatives focused on faculty development, education innovations and assessment best practices. I am particularly passionate about promoting interprofessional education and student leadership, areas in which I have led university initiatives and published collaborative research.
Moreover, I aspire to help shape national conversations around curriculum innovation, instructional technology integration, and sustainable program assessment models. My leadership on school-wide and university committees—ranging from program review and outcomes assessment to general education and wellness—has equipped me with the strategic vision and collaborative skills necessary to contribute meaningfully to ASAHP’s evolving agenda.
In joining the Association’s leadership or committee efforts, I seek to bring a thoughtful, data-informed perspective that aligns with ASAHP’s goals of advancing education, research, and practice in the health professions. My dedication to mentorship, continuous learning, and academic excellence positions me to support the development of the next generation of health professionals and educators.
Ultimately, I view ASAHP not only as a professional home but also as a dynamic platform for shaping the future of allied health education. I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to contribute more fully to its mission and to work alongside colleagues who share a commitment to excellence, innovation, and collaboration in health professions education.
